French Breweries Dumping Beer Down The Drain

While a lot of people are enjoying an extra cocktail while stuck at home, some brewers are pouring it down the drain.

France is getting rid of ten million litres of beer, the equivalent of four olympic size swimming pools. Most of the beer about to be dumped is craft beer which is very hoppy and will spoil after a few months in storage. The brewers say the “closed” sign on cafes and restaurants is partly to blame, along with the cancellation of festivals and lack of tourists.

That leaves all the beer unconsumed, still left in casks and no good to anyone. French beer producers say the ten million litre loss represents a small drop of what the industry will produce in the next few months but is a loss of millions for producers.

The creation of craft beer has seen a surge in popularity in a country best known for its wine and cheese. One brewer says they invested two hundred and sixty million dollars just last year, only to see the industry dry up.

No one likes flat beer.
