First Day Plans
Listen Now: First Day Plans
Landed a new job, get started on the right foot. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.
According to the recruitment platform Hive.com there are five things you should never do when starting a new job and five things you should do right away. Let’s start with what to avoid. Do not act on impulse. Even before your first day, think about how to exit your current job. Don’t make a big announcement that you’re leaving. Tell your manager quietly and then go from there, because there could be a counteroffer or your new job might not be what you thought it was. Avoid burning bridges with your last employer. Avoid making friends on day one. Be friendly and meet everyone you can, but the work should be your main focus. Show them you can learn quickly and be an asset to the team. Let any friendships with people form organically. This is especially good advice for any workplaces with a political nature.
