Elephant Dung Gin: A Surprising South African Hit

There’s a new gin on the market… and it might be a little hard to swallow.

The husband and wife team behind the South African gin say it features an unusual ingredient: elephant dung. They dreamed up the idea about a year ago after learning that elephants eat a variety of fruits and flowers, but digest less than a third of it. As a result you get elephant dung with a wide variety of botanicals.

Les Ansley says his wife explored the idea after a safari and woke him up in the middle of the night to share her inspiration. Their first batch of elephant dung came from the park where they had taken a safari, now they collect it with their bare hands. After about five bags are collected, the droppings are dried, crumbled then washed. Only the remains of fruits, flowers and leaves are left behind.

The couple described the gin as a wooded, almost spicy flavor. They say the taste can vary with the seasons. The gin is a hit with tourists, especially those looking to surprise their friends.
