Amtrak ExpansionTravel trends are changing and the government is making a big investment on your habits. Recently the Department of Transportation gave Amtrak a $2.45 billion loan to modernize and expand service in the northeast corridor that includes Washington D.C., New York and Boston. This comes after new reports that Amtrak carried three times as many riders between those three cities as the airline industry over the last year. Amtrak says the bulk of the loan will go to next generation high speed train sets. The biggest improvement is that the trains will be able to hold 40% more passengers and those people might be traveling in a greater level of comfort. The new cabins will features amenities that include personal outlets, USB ports, adjustable reading lights and improved Wi-Fi. The trains will also be the fastest in the country with speeds that hit 150 miles an hour. That means you can get from DC to New York about 35 minutes faster than the current trains. Might make it a little hard to enjoy the scenic countryside.
