Aunt Jemima is getting a new name. I’m Brian Banmiller on Business.

Pepsico Inc has announced that its pancake mix and syrup products will now be known as Pearl Milling Company. The name change was announced last year after the company acknowledged the name and image on its products was a racial stereotype. In 18-90, the first face of the pancake products was a former slave by the name of Nancy Green. The decision to drop the old brand came as part of a nationwide corporate response to protests over the death of George Floyd in may of last year. Other brands such as uncle ben’s rice quickly followed. The company says Pearl Milling Company was founded in 18-88 in st. Joseph Missouri and was the first to develop a self-rising pancake mix. The original aunt Jemima packaging will be on store shelves through June until everything is switched over. In addition to the brand change, PepsiCo says the pearl milling company will also be announcing details of a one-million-dollar commitment to black girls and women. Not everyone is on board with the change but they don’t have to buy it. Brian Banmiller, CBS news.
