3D-Printed Meat: KFC’s Newest Secret Ingredient

KFC is adding another ingredient to its secret recipe… a 3d printer.

The chicken restaurant chain announced it will begin working with a russian company called 3d bioprinting solutions. They will print chicken meat using chicken cells and plant material. As for KFC, it will provide the printing firm with ingredients such as breading and spices to achieve its signature taste.

It will also attempt to replicate the taste and texture of real chicken. KFC says bioprinted nuggets would be more environmentally friendly to produce than regular meat. Citing a study from The American Environmental Science and Technology Journal, it says bioprinting will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and use less energy.

But just because they will be artificial doesn’t mean they’re meat free. The company says the experiment is not for vegetarians, but there are other options available. KFC says the bioprinted nuggets will be available for final testing in Moscow this fall. No word yet on when the printed nuggets will be available for KFC customers to enjoy.

It’s being called the meat of the future… now we just need to taste it.
