An Online Romance
The most famous love story of all time has been portrayed on theater stages for centuries and the silver screen for decades. And now with all of their sweet sorrow, Romeo and Juliet are coming to twitter.
A twenty-first century rendition of “Romeo and Juliet” will be featured on both Twitter and You Tube. The production is titled “Such Tweet Sorrow” and is collaboration between the Royal Shakespeare Company and Mudlark, which produces cell phone entertainment. While organizers have devised a script loosely based on the original play, most of the dialogue will be improvised by the cast through tweets.
And already there are some noticeable differences to the script. While the family names remain the same, the Montague’s and Capulet’s are feuding over a car crash and the scenes are set in the year two thousand. Meanwhile sixteen-year-old Juliet is busy planning her birthday party and enlisting the help of the audience by posting videos on you tube. The production is set to last five weeks but don’t expect Romeo to sweep in anytime soon. According to a recent tweet the ill fated lover is too busy with his X-box. While technology may be the only way to educate today’s generation you can bet Shakespeare is rolling on over.
