The Candy BusinessThey say the candy business isn’t as sweet as it used to be, but thanks to social media we’re getting another taste.

Over the past year or so, a change in diet trends and a search for healthier snacks has left the candy business a little less than full. But now the Mars company, maker of M&M’s and Snickers says there is no reason to fear the end of your favorite candy bar thanks to the “treat yourself” movement.

The company says it has noticed a two percent growth associated with the phrase being used on social media especially instagram. Consumers will allow themselves a small sweet treat and post a picture of it for all their followers to see. Now Mars is cashing in on the treat yourself trend by making its packaging more appealing for pictures and using ads that let consumers know it’s ok to indulge every once in a while.

Another trend saving the candy industry? Giving someone their favorite treat as a gift. Another reason to perfect the packaging in a way that is visually appealing. Guess it’s not always the inside that counts.
