Listen Now: FedEx Fumble: Why Your Holiday Gifts Might Not Make It This Year

[xyz-ips snippet=”post-thumb-url”]Companies are gearing up for the holiday season; and for FedEx it’s beginning to look a little desperate.

According to Reuters, FedEx is so desperate for pilots to fly during the holiday shipping season it’s offering bonuses to anyone willing to push back their retirement.

And what’s it worth to them; anywhere from forty to one hundred and ten thousand dollars. Not a bad end of career bonus for pilots already making $300,000 a year thanks to three decades in the cockpit.

Industry experts say this is another example of global demand; Boeing estimates that by 2035 the world will need another eight hundred thousand pilots.

So why is no one taking to the friendly skies? Some reasons include a federal law, which says pilots have to give up their wings at age sixty-five.

Then there are the requirements of more flight time hours, and safety rules which is leading to poaching between competing airlines. Add in the cost and time of flight school and more planes are spending their days on the tarmac.

That is, until they’re able to fly themselves.
