Early Retirement

by | Aug 13, 2018

[xyz-ips snippet=”post-thumb-url”]Most people would like to work less, and it turns out most people probably should.

If you’re over forty and looking to cut back on your work hours, science is on your side. According to a report published in the Melbourne Institute Worker paper, people over forty are most productive when they work three days a week or less.

During the study, researchers followed three thousand male and thirty five hundred female volunteers. During this time they asked them to do things such as read words backwards, read words out loud and match numbers and letters under a deadline.

The results found that performance improves as the volunteers increased their working hours up to twenty-five. However after twenty-five hours, performance declined in both the male and female groups; those tasked with working fifty-five hours a week showed worse results than those who were retired or unemployed.

The researchers say work is a double-edged sword. It can stimulate brain activity but it can also burn people out and do more harm than good, personally and professionally. Sounds like it’s time to cut back.
