End of the World Wine

There’s a new wine being introduced to the American pallet and it’s almost out of this world.

Thirty eight year old Santiago Bernasconi is a winemaker from Patagonia. A large piece of land located on the southern tip of South America. And it’s here on the edge of the earth that Santiago and his colleagues are experimenting with the world of wine. They say growing wine here means dealing with a variety of elements.

In the summer the temperature can climb past 104 degrees drying out the soil. And the main source of water comes from the Andes Mountains so a weak winter snowfall means bad news for the grapes. This means the vines are forced to grow deep in order to reach the water. But when everything goes according to plan the deep vines produce a white wine with a unique fresh fruit taste. It also gives the red wines a higher than usual alcohol content.

Now they’re hoping to crack into the U.S. market with their end of the world wine. And with the constant rain drowning the spirits of California winemakers; customers could be ready to uncork a new flavor.
