You may have promised to forsake all others but what about forsaking your finances.

According to an online poll three in ten Americans commit financial infidelity by lying to their spouses about money. The poll of about two thousand people showed thirty one percent of couples who had combined their cash weren’t up front about hidden bank accounts, cash and debt.

The survey was commissioned by Forbes and the National Endowment for Financial Education. A statement from Forbes says financial infidelity might be the new norm which is bad news for your long term plans. Ted Beck, Chief Executive for the National Endowment for Financial Education says the poll also showed that lying about your finances can cause significant damage to the relationship. Beck says often times your financial fibs can result in separation or divorce.

The most common lie at 58% of those surveyed is hiding cash. This is followed by hiding minor purchases or bills. The biggest indiscretion came in the form of hiding a major purchase or an entire bank account. So if you’re thinking about tying the knot do your research. A credit check is not the time to find out that debt will do you part.
