Uncorking Smoke
There’s a new wine on the shelves and the flavor might leave a bitter taste on the palate of non-smokers.
The 2008 Pinot Noir from California’s Anderson Valley is showing up in stores and the taste is being compared to a wet ashtray. Severe forest fires during the growing season are being blamed for the smoky aftertaste and have left growers scrambling for a solution.
Winemaker Larry Londer added powder from the bladder of a sturgeon which is known to rid wine of unwanted elements. Neighboring winemakers have also tried milk by-products and egg whites. Zach Rasmuson is a winemaker at Goldeneye Vineyards and will release all but the best of his 2008 Pinot Noir under a different label because it didn’t meet his standards. Other wineries are also releasing just a small percentage or will release prices to ensure good value for consumers. Toby Hill of Phillips Hill Vineyards is trying to cash in on the smoky taste by blending 2008 Pinots and calling the finished product “Ring of Fire.” Not a bad deal for anyone who only smokes when they drink. And it’s easier when you can satisfy both habits with only one cork.
