The Runaway Car
Stephen King wrote a book that became a horror movie about a car that came to life. And unfortunately for Toyota that same plot is coming to life for them.
The feds are being called in to investigate the real life Christine. A Toyota Prius that reportedly sped out of control on a Southern California freeway. Earlier this week James Sikes said he was driving his Prius just outside of San Diego when the accelerator stuck and the car reached a speed of 94 mph.
Sikes says he called 911 and the California Highway Patrol helped him slow down and shut off the engine. Toyota says the Prius isn’t part of the recent recall involving the stuck accelerator but is covered by an older recall where the floor mats can catch the gas pedal. This latest story comes at a bad time for Toyota who just days before was trying to prove that electronic flaws could not cause cars to speed out of control under real driving conditions. Toyota is now offering 0% interest rates and free five year warranties to new car customers in hopes a good deal will make up for bad press.
